Turkey has more than 40 million online users, and the internet is an important source of news and information for many who are looking for alternative news sources.

Last summer during the anti-government protests that swept Turkey, millions turned to social media websites to fill the news gaps left by television stations and news channels. The use of such networks especially the Twitter made the authorities nervous. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Twitter the worst menace to society, and threatening to wipe it out. On Thursday the government finally blocked Twitter's service in Turkey and people were denied access to the website. Just before midnight Thursday, over 10 million Twitter users found that they couldn't reach the website. However, within three hours some two-point-five million tweets were posted showing that many have found ways to circumvent the ban.
