Let’s call a terrorist a terrorist
It was on July 22, 2011 that a 33-year-old ultranationalist, pro-Zionist, Islamophobic, schizophrenic terrorist named Anders Behring Breivik made the headlines around the world by ruthlessly killing 77 innocent people in the Norwegian capital of Oslo and the island of Utoya by bombing a governmental building and carrying out a mass shooting at the camp of the Workers’ Youth League.
Since then, the rise of xenophobia and Islamophobia in Europe has been a major topic of discussion in media and academia as well as among the ordinary people on the streets. Now the trial of this pitiless terrorist has started and the world is again remembering the painful memories of July 22, 2011.
Andres Breivik who perpetrated the heartrending attacks and destabilized the security of one the world’s most peaceful and tranquil countries was diagnosed by the court-appointed psychiatrists to be suffering from severe paranoid schizophrenia. But it was not his mental disorder, which some psychiatrists deny, that ignited the flames of hostility in his heart and led him to carry out the heinous actions. His 1,518-page manifesto which was emailed to more than 1,000 people some 90 minutes before the happening of the terrorist attacks clearly bespeaks his strong antagonism toward the Muslims, immigrants, non-Europeans and his unshakable attachment to Israel, white nationalism and right-wing populism.
Ironically, as soon as the news was published that 77 people were killed in two separate terrorist attacks which took place in less than two hours, the Western mainstream media pointed their fingers at the Muslims, introducing “Jihadist” groups as the main culprits. The first reports from the New York Times suggested that the Oslo bomber was a Jihadi. As reported by the British political analyst Vijay Prashad, Professor Will McCants wrote in a Tweet that “Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami” group was responsible for the killings. The Times repeated the same allegations shortly and held the Ansar group accountable for the killings. Perhaps it’s a common routine in Europe and the United States to attribute every terrorist attack and violent action to the Muslims. The accusations against Ansar were removed only after Breivik’s lawyer said that he has confessed to the killings during the police interrogations.
A few days later and once the independent media looked into the depth of the horrendous incident, it was cleared that Muslims were the main target of the attacks rather than being the perpetrators thereof. Breivik’s compendium unequivocally showed his enmity toward the Muslims and non-Europeans. He had talked of himself as a knight dedicated to eradicating the tide of Muslim immigration to Europe. Ulav Andersson, a close friend of Breivik, told Russia Today that Anders had “a big ego” and would be easily irritated by those of Middle Eastern or South Asian origin. Breivik was one of the proponents of Eurabia conspiracy theory which holds that the influence of Muslim Arabs is increasing in Europe and the European politicians and leaders are yielding to this influence. In part of his elaborate manifesto, the Nordic terrorist explains the basis for accepting this theory: “The Arab states demanded from Europe access to Western science and technology, European political independence from the United States, European pressure on the United States to align with their Arab policy and demonization of Israel as a threat to world peace, as well as measures favorable to Arab immigration and dissemination of Islamic culture in Europe. This cooperation would also include recognition of the Palestinians as a distinct people and the PLO.”
This manifesto which is actually an unmistakable research project with hundreds of quotations and references, lists in details, all the pro-Palestinian, pro-Muslim statements which the European leaders have sporadically made in the contemporary history. He deliberately neglects the heap of anti-Islamic, anti-Palestinian sayings and actions of the European leaders and also the British-Canadian alliance for establishing the Israeli state in 1948.
On July 20, he uploaded a 12-minute video to the internet in which he summarizes parts of his dangerous ideology. “Multiculturalism,” he says, “is an anti-European hate ideology designed to deconstruct European cultures and traditions, European identities, European Christendom and even European nation-states. And, as such, it is an evil genocidal ideology created for the sole purpose of annihilating everything European.”
At the final part of the video, Breivik who has been wearing a quasi-military dress invites the Christians to rise against what he considers a peril to the European identity and receive a heavenly reward: “Onward, Christian soldiers! Celebrate us, the martyrs of the conservative revolution, for we will soon dine in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
But why had the insane Norwegian terrorist selected his victims from among the members of the youth wing of a Labor party in his country? The answer is simple. Only one day before realizing his premeditated plan, on which he was working for almost two years, the Youth Camp in Utoya had concluded a pro-Palestinian rally, in line with their previous pro-Palestinian activities, calling for the recognition of an independent Palestinian state by the government of Norway. During the second day of Labor Youth League summer camp at Utoya, the Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store met with the young hopefuls of the party.
Amid the insistence of the young party members, Gahr Store indicated that his government is ready to recognize the Palestinian statehood. “The Palestinians must have their own state, the occupation must end, the wall must be demolished and it must happen now,” said the Foreign Minister to cheers from the audience.
The Workers’ Youth League has a background of supporting the Palestinians’ cause and this was what irritated Breivik.
Now, the trial of Breivik is underway and the world is again thinking about the root causes of that dreadful incident. But one important note that should not be overlooked: the Western mainstream media are once again distorting the reality and misleading the public opinions in a nasty and malicious way. Just let’s take a look at the headlines of the news stories and articles published by some of the Western newspapers:
“… Norway’s legal system deals with a confessed killer …” (San Francisco Chronicle, April 17)
“Mass killer Anders Breivik said today he …” (Irish Times, April 19)
“Right-wing extremist Anders Breivik, who has admitted killing 77 people during a politically-motivated murder spree…” (ABC News, April 10)
“Killer’s sanity key issue in Norway massacre trial” (Boston Globe, April 10)
“Norway gunman Anders Breivik sane – new psych probe” (Herald Sun, April 11)
“Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik planned to bomb President Barack Obama…” (Daily Telegraph, April 1)
The common point in the coverage of all of these media and other Western newspapers on the trial of Breivik is that they have euphemistically downgraded the Norwegian terrorist to a “mass killer” and even a “gunman”, refusing to call him a terrorist, as if the word is exclusively devised to be referred to the Muslims. This hypocritical stance in approaching terrorism and extremism underlines the West’s double standards in dealing with the Muslims and shows their insincerity. What if Breivik were a Muslim and had killed not 77 but two or three Norwegian teenagers? How would the media in the U.S. and Europe have treated him? Wouldn’t they attack all the Muslim states in the world under the pretext that a Muslim “terrorist” has killed some European citizens? Yes, this is a kind of hypocrisy which narrates the sad story of double standards and Islamophobia. They simply don’t have the courage to call a real terrorist a terrorist.

Mission Impossible? Unplugging Americans From The Matrix

Americans, the British, and Western Europeans are accustomed to thinking of themselves as the representatives of freedom, democracy, and morality in the world. The West passes judgment on the rest of the world as if the West is God and the rest of the world are barbarians in need of chastisement, invasion, and occupation. As readers know, from time to time I raise questions about the validity of the West's extreme hubris. (See for example, the following articles: Washington's Insouciance Has No Rival and Is Western Democracy Real or a Facade? )
China is often a country about which Washington's moralists get on their high horse. However, China's "authoritarian" government is actually more responsive to its people than America's "elected democratic" government. Moreover, however incomplete on paper the civil liberties of China's people, the Chinese government has not declared that it can violate with impunity whatever rights Chinese citizens have. And it is not China that is running torture prisons all over the globe.
For some time I have had in mind a realistic comparison of the two countries instead of the standard propagandistic comparison, but Ron Unz has beat me to the task (see, China's Rise, America's Fall and Chinese Melamine and American Vioxx: A Comparison ). Unz provides a chance for an education. Don't miss it.
Unz has done an excellent job. Moreover, he cleverly understates the case for China and overstates the case for America so as not to unduly arouse the flag-wavers. Nevertheless, the conclusion is clear: The Chinese are less threatened by their "extractive elites" than Americans are by their counterparts.
Moreover, it is America's, not China's, extractive elites who are bombing, occupying, and droning other countries. As the bumper sticker says, "Be nice to America or we will bring democracy to your country."
As for economic management, there is no comparison. Unz reports that during the past three decades China has achieved the most rapid rate of economic development in human history. Moreover, most of the new income has flowed into the pockets of Chinese workers, not to the one percent. While American real median incomes have been stagnant for decades, incomes for Chinese workers have doubled every decade for three decades. A recent World Bank report attributes more than 100 percent of the drop in global poverty rates to China's rise.
In the last decade China's industrial output quadrupled. China now produces more automobiles than America and Japan combined and accounted for 85 percent of the increase in the world's production of cars in the past decade.
In 1978 the American economy was 15 times larger than China's. In the next few years China's GDP is expected to exceed that of the US.
This is heady stuff providing astonishing details of how poorly Americans are served by their elites.
America has failed, because political elites represent only the powerful special interests that write the country's laws in exchange for funding the political campaigns of "lawmakers." To divert attention from their failures, American elites point fingers at external scapegoats. China, for example, is accused of manipulating its currency. As Unz says, the scapegoating is political theater designed for the ignorant and gullible.
America's economists, or most of them, have so prostituted themselves that propaganda has become wisdom. Most Americans believe that if China would simply let the value of its currency rise more rapidly relative to the dollar, America's economic woes would be at an end. It is beyond belief that any economist could think that Americans with stagnant and declining incomes would be made better off by a sharp rise in the prices of goods manufactured in China on which Americans are dependent, or that the US dollar's role as reserve currency, the main source of American power, could survive such a manifestation of Chinese economic superiority.
Americans associate lawlessness with unaccountable governments and view China's government as unaccountable. However, Unz points out that it is the Bush/Obama Regime that has declared itself to be unaccountable to both US and international law.
The demise of the War Powers Act and the Geneva Conventions, and the asserted power of the executive to imprison without trial or charges or to assassinate any American whom the executive thinks might be a "national-security threat" are indicative of a total police state masquerading as an accountable democracy. In America six-year old little girls who misbehave in school are handcuffed, jailed, and charged with felonies. (see, 10 Disgusting Examples of Very Young School Children Being Arrested, Handcuffed and Brutalized By Police ) Not even Hitler and Stalin went this far.
Americans have lost control of the government, and governments that are not controlled by the people are not democracies. In America today, Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, and the entire social safety net are threatened by the vociferous desire for war profits by armament plutocrats and by financial institutions determined that ordinary citizens bear the cost of the banksters incompetence and fraud.
Unz's comparison of how the Chinese media and government handled the melamine or infant formula scandal and how the American media and government handled Merck's Vioxx scandal is especially damning. It was China's controlled media and unaccountable government that punished the infant formula wrongdoers, while America's free press and accountable government allowed Merck to walk.
Unz's conclusion is that it is in America, not China, where life is regarded as cheap.
Ron Unz is an American hero, and a very courageous one. As George Orwell said, "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."
It is an even more courageous act when no one wants to hear the truth. As Frantz Fanon said, "Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn't fit in with the core belief."
Or as it is explained to Neo in the film, "The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system, and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it."
Most of the people I know personally are not willing to be unplugged. I assume my readers are, so seize the opportunity to be further unplugged and read Ron Unz's comparison of America and China.
Then do what you can to unplug others.

Cindy Sheehan: Peace has a day in Court

For those of you who know me and have been following my story, you know that part of my resistance to the US Empire is my refusal to pay income taxes.
This morning (April 19th), a new episode unfolded in my ongoing struggle with the IRS and the Empire the agency is nestled in.
I was subpoenaed to appear in the 9th Circuit court of the US Federal Court system in Sacramento, California - my state's capitol.
For background, I have had two meetings with the IRS agent assigned to my case where I expressed to him my unwillingness, due to my principles, to participate in funding a system that commits crimes almost every second of every day. At this point, the IRS is trying to collect 105 grand that it says I owe for the tax years 2005-2006. I first became a war tax refuser in 2005.
My defense is one based on a far superior morality than one practiced by the US government and the fact that my outspokenness against this immorality, and my notoriety in doing so, has put me into a precarious position in a climate where free speech and peaceful protest is being suppressed, sometimes very violently, as we have increasingly witnessed.
In the past after about 15 arrests, I have also had many opportunities to appear in court, federal and otherwise, in front of judges who never showed one bit of compassion or sympathy towards the protesters' first amendment right trumping the governments' harsh rules and laws profoundly inhibiting those rights.
I have never once "gotten off" using a defense based on the Bill of Rights of the US Constitution.
In that Bill of Rights, there's an especially pesky little 1st Amendment that says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Yet Congress and other legislative bodies routinely pass these laws prohibiting the free exercise of speech and the right to peaceably assemble and our protests become more and more meaningless as we are pushed farther and farther away from our, for want of a better word, targets. In addition, the police state is increasingly chasing protesters away by tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, sound weaponry and other supposedly "non-lethal" means.
When I decided to be a conscientious objector to war tax, I knew that the consequence could be harassment and/or punishment, but I decided to do it long before I became well known as a gadfly to Empire. I was willing to accept those consequences because I felt that if I were put on trial, the reasons that I don't fund war crimes would have to also be put on trial, and I think it's the only way that the illegality of the wars can actually get a hearing.
I have an advisor who is an experienced tax attorney who advises the National War Tax Resister's Coordinating Committee and he feels that the Empire may be targeting me to get publicity and to intimidate others from taking the same course of action that I actually encourage others to do, so he could inform me as to what usually happens every step of the way, but my case could be "special" and contain many surprises, a few which did occur in court today.
Before I continue, I'd like to say that since I have become an antiwar "criminal," my respect for the legal profession has grown by leaps and bounds. I have always managed to attract some amazing attorneys to help me in my cases always on a pro bono basis and this case is no exception. My attorney of record in California is San Francisco attorney, Dennis Cunningham, who has been involved in many protest cases and advising us is Peter Goldberger in Pennsylvania. I am so thankful for the help of my attorneys and for the NWRTCC and I honestly don't know what I would do without their legal help and peer support.
Anyway, there was a pre-hearing rally in Sacramento today and supporters came there from Los Angeles, Ventura, San Jose, San Francisco, Nevada City and Sacramento - we filled the small courtroom after the rally (my pre rally statement is linked here). After we went through security and had to relinquish cameras and the signs we had pinned to us showing my son's picture and my picture and NO WAR TAXES printed on top, we went to the courtroom where my hearing was the final one on a short docket of four.
We were arguing that I had a 1st Amendment right to the protest and a 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination and the attorney for the IRS and her buddies that traveled from DC (yes, of course, this is not a political persecution) argued that a "blanket 5th" is not allowed by case law and rulings and she wanted me to be ordered to go to a room in the federal building to answer questions about my "assets." (My lawyer brilliantly argued that the "secret" agencies already had all that information on me, anyway) - but there was no way that I was going to be blindsided by an unwarranted demand like that and this is where some extraordinary things happened.
Dennis was able to expound at length about our fears of political retribution and my moral opposition to the wars and he was able to iterate that I was against militarism and the huge proportion of our taxes that go towards it. This is what I have always wanted - the position of Peace had its day in court today! I was thrilled beyond belief, but what happened when Dennis finished literally blew me away.
The Magistrate who presided over the hearing, John Moulds, is an older man whom my attorney said has been on the bench for years and years, but is known to be "fair" and not too "excitable."
The Magistrate said that he read all of our motions and he looked me right in the eyes from across the room and with great emotion in his voice he said, "It strikes me as a civilized way to protest uncivilized acts." (Reuters) I actually started to cry because it was such a beautiful thing to say in such a loving way and I can't ever recall anyone in the government and/or establishment that has ever genuinely acknowledged my pain and practically admitted that what happened to Casey and my family was disordered. Oh, many democrats pretended that they were sorry for my pain, but they were only doing it for crass political gain - and when the republicans acknowledged it, they were "thanking" me for my son's brave service to the country - I don't know which approach was worse, but I felt no compassion until today.
Then the lady from DC said that she could "sympathize with conscientious objectors" but "losing a son" was no excuse to "break the law with impunity." What's the empire's excuse for breaking the law with impunity in many ways on every day?
Dennis and I agreed to meet with the IRS at a future date so I could do a line by line 5th amendment claim to each question and the lady from DC requested that the magistrate order me to comply and show up for the meeting and he said something like, "I want the parties to talk, this hearing is over and I have 45 days to make a ruling one way or the other on your motion - I may, or I may not." According to Peter, this is also something unprecedented. I came away feeling very energized and encouraged by today's proceedings and if the Empire wants to make someone cower before them in fear to intimidate others, they picked the wrong person. Even if the magistrate hadn't been so favorable to our side, I still would feel triumphant.
The fissures of imperial overreach and excess are widening and the Empire is being exposed for the ridiculous bully it really is.
No Empire lasts forever and the terribly destructive nature of ours requires us to help its inevitable collapse. I am doing everything I can in my own small ways with all the courage I can muster and I appreciate all the support and help I get along the way.
| Comment: What Cindy is doing is certainly commendable. This is a direct attack on the use of the phrase "war on terror," in which is a metaphor which entangles implicitness. The idea of not expressing a civilized or honorable demeanor in both language and interpretation is called predication where the subject has been destroyed in this sense. It is as though the subject is cloaked in some way making it difficult to define. In a clause such as "financial terrorism," the subject and predicate are assumed as valid. Whether it is true or not, it is still possible, whereas the metaphor may serve as a predator alone and this would be addressing the facts as they exist. So the real problem as I have studied it lays more with the metaphorical language than the clause and this sense is in use as a methodology to destroy the subject or to make it so that the subjects are invalidated for extended corruption. The word "implicate," is from the root plek- which means: to weave, plait, twine, and plektos, twisted. This may represent what occurs when the subject is death and the worship thereof. This is not a universal preposition unless you intend to destroy all life. The use of "war on terror," justly claims there is no difference between them. This is true as they are both nouns. Where is the verb? |

A USA Today reporter and editor investigating Pentagon propaganda contractors have themselves been subjected to a propaganda campaign of sorts, waged on the Internet through a series of bogus websites.
Fake Twitter and Facebook accounts have been created in their names, along with a Wikipedia entry and dozens of message board postings and blog comments. Websites were registered in their names.
The timeline of the activity tracks USA Today’s reporting on the military’s “information operations” program ….
For example, Internet domain registries show the website TomVandenBrook.com was created Jan. 7 — just days after Pentagon reporter Tom Vanden Brook first contacted Pentagon contractors involved in the program. Two weeks after his editor Ray Locker’s byline appeared on a story, someone created a similar site, RayLocker.com, through the same company.
If the websites were created using federal funds, it could violate federal law prohibiting the production of propaganda for domestic consumption.

“I find it creepy and cowardly that somebody would hide behind my name and presumably make up other names in an attempt to undermine my credibility,” Vanden Brook said.
The activity is the work of what online reputation expert Andy Beal calls a “determined detractor.”
“It’s like a machine gun approach. They’re trying to generate as much online content as they can,” he said. “The person who’s behind this, we can give them a lot of credit here and assume they’re very sophisticated about reputation attacks.”

“This is the work of somebody who knows what they’re doing. They have some experience of covering their tracks. This is probably not the first time they’ve done something like this,” said Beal, CEO of Trackur, an online reputation tracking service.
Some postings merely copied Vanden Brook’s and Locker’s previous reporting. Others accused them of being sponsored by the Taliban. “They disputed nothing factual in the story about information operations,” Vanden Brook said.
On Feb. 8, as Vanden Brook continued to ask questions of contractors, a new Wikipedia user attempted to create an entry on him, alleging he “gained worldwide notoriety” for his “misreporting” of the 2006 Sago Mine disaster in West Virginia.
Early reports from the scene, relying on faulty information from the governor and mine operators — said 12 of 13 miners were found alive, when in fact only one was. Many news outlets, including the Associated Press, the New York Times and USA Today, conveyed the inaccurate reports in early editions.
[S]imilar comments started populating Internet message boards and blogs. In one case, the fake @Tomvandenbrook Twitter account defended his Sago reporting to another apparently fake account.
Vanden Brook said he’s continuing to pursue the story. “If they thought it would deter me from writing about this, they’re wrong.”
“This is a clear attempt at intimidation that has failed,” Locker said.

"Social State" versus "Corporate State": FROM EUROPEAN FASCISM TO "GLOBAL MONEY-SEQUENCE ABSOLUTISM" Part X

Corporate-system drivers of “deregulation”, “privatization” and “lower taxes” lead reversals of civil commons evolution. When 70% of France supports the strikes against raising the public pension age in the Fall of 2010, resistance to the totalizing private-profit agenda grounds in the civil commons. Yet even as they are again attacked in Italy and Greece to pay private banks and bond issuers a year later, France’s uprising dissolves from view. More profoundly, Argentina’s’ triumphant default on the very same debt as Greece in 2002 is erased from public choice space. Any example of regaining the real economy from the money-sequence party is silenced – but the unspoken Latin American revolution from Argentina’s historic default carries on. Once released from the debt-money clawhold in the face of the direst IMF threats, it regrouped its economy to public direction, spectacular agricultural productivity, capital and export controls, and world-leading reduction of poverty.
Yet in the European crisis, only the “catastrophe of default” is trumpeted by the corporate-state leaders and media - the historical amnesia that sustains the rule of the corporate money-sequence system. Thus Greece and Italy are equated to their debt status with private banks and money-lender rates, while Europe is equated to its new currency of payment to them. Bailing out the private banks and bondholders is, accordingly, equated to “saving Greece” or whatever society is next in the money-party’s sights. The meaning of society itself is transmuted to serving private bank issuers of debt. Taking back the control of debt issue and credit to public bank authority is the known solution no leader dares to speak, nor media to mention.
In normal times, civil commons are dismantled, defunded and restructured to serve the private-profit order as “more efficient and cost-saving” wherever the people allow it. In post-2008 times, slash-and-burn of the life-serving public sectors and services becomes a war of movement towards their elimination. Facts do not compute in either process. Consistent demonstration of decline in life goods and cost-efficiency wherever the corporate money-sequence system invades is forgotten in the culture of occupation.
In the wider culture of surrender, perpetual threats of war distract attention with their invariant meaning unstated – armed aggression to seize poorer countries’ assets for foreign corporate exploitation. Always called “defending freedom”, the ever beating war drums and threats are fore-grounded by one coliseum contest after another in “fight to the death”. The mobs are thus held in helpless trance. On the global plane of humanity’s fields of life, the great disorder simultaneously loots and pollutes the natural world on every plane by the same value code of money-gain and growth as all there is. The cumulative collapse of common life goods does not, therefore, compute to the ‘economics’ of this system for which all life conditions from the atmosphere and breathing air to the phytoplankton top and living grounds of the world’s oceans do not enter any market or state account of society’s well-being.
Social State Evolution versus Corporate State Growth: The Battle Lines Defined
Life-value analysis recognises that there is not one modern state, but two conflicting states within one – the now dominant state to serve and grow private corporations and commodity markets at whatever cost to life capacities and support systems, and the public state to serve the common life interest of universal life goods at all levels.
Herein lies the core of the transformation of contemporary human society backwards or forwards. On the make-or-break level of public funding, the lines of invasion are clear. Government functions and expenditures are increasingly structured to subsidize private-profit interests towards bankrupting the social state. Since the 2008 collapse of the global money-party scheme, countless trillions of dollars and still counting of present and future public funds have been haemorrhaged out by many channels to refinance the dominant private banks and bondholders with no function but maximum take at the cost of life systems on every level. This has been the turning point of the money-sequence cancer for all to see, but the public money-flows out to corporate-bank circuits only increase.
The global crisis developing from the corporate-rights system consuming society’s life support systems has been, however, a long time building. Longitudinal diagnosis reveals public subsidization of global for-profit corporations growing with no accountability in ever more staggering amounts - continual major tax cuts and write-offs which make major corporations pay less tax than their lower-end employees; growing subsidies to dominant corporations for extraction of public resources and pollutive commodity production; continued transfer of credit and currency creation to large private banks and rising public subsidies for private automobile, weapons, aeronautical and commodity research and manufacture; perpetual expansion of heavy-gauge highways and police-and-prison systems tailored to private corporate interests; rising armed forces and corporate weapons production to guard these and other for-profit corporate appropriations and interests beyond home borders; and ever increasing bankrolling of corporate-trade offices, negotiations and enforcements to systemize and extend corporate rights further within and across borders. All are justified as “necessary” and “in the public interest” until life-value analysis is applied to recognise the opposite.
One historic heist to beggar all before it in bleeding peoples and social states dry across the U.S. and European Union has stood out historically - the 2008 crash of the central private debt-issue system leveraged to uncontrolled levels of extraction from already hollowed out economies and peoples across the world. Yet within eighteen months after the many trillions of dollars of direct transfer of public wealth to the largest private corporate banks in 2008 as “necessary to save the economy and restore credit”, public-sector and debt crises have only spread further. Time to pay for this vast hand-out to failed private money-sequencers to hold onto for still more private profit and executive bonuses has now fallen upon life-serving sectors of the economy to be squeezed further. Life-blind categories of judgement and decision prop every step so that the fatal meaning is hardly conceived. Societies’ life support systems are now pursued to extract more from them. The private system of money growth with no limit or goal but more of itself now feeds on what is left wherever it can while hoarding its public giveaways to go on hollowing out its life hosts.
The darkest turn has been that the European Union itself, whose public sectors and civil commons infrastructures have led the world, are bled to pay for the carcinogenic money-sequencing at ever greater public expense. Public constitutional control of credit and currency remains blocked out and is nowhere directed to funding the common life interest of the real economy itself. None goes out to social and natural life support systems, nor to secure public employment, nor to life-serving purpose of any kind. All goes to the carcinogenic private money sequences to more without any life function. All comes out of present and future citizen lives and life support systems to pay for their continued growth.
Beneath the surface play of phenomena, the determining economic form of corporate money sequences is undiagnosed for what it is. The system crests in pure exaction, expropriation and chaos with Wall Street leading in licensed fraud to steal the life security of tens of millions - but lavishly rewarded by the U.S. government with nearly a trillion dollars to begin. The cancer circuits are thus re-financed to keep on hollowing out the world, with ever more public money to ensure the bank’s private debt extractions. The societies least able to pay are always the first to be made to ensure that the rising costs on their private debt payments never end. The private financial corporations are thus at the top of the feeding cycle for which governments are the obedient enforcer, funder and granter of money-creation rights. The great meltdown had been set up in countless ways across the post-1980 global system – all to enable the corporate-person rights’ regime to turn societies, their peoples, their resources and their built and natural environments into free sites for multiply leveraged money-sequence takeovers, resource looting, and junk commodity invasions as well as debt enslavement.
“Free trade” treaties and wars against non-conforming societies have been the major pincers of attack, grounded in private bank control of the public’s money and credit issue. In these ways, formerly evolving social orders to serve people’s lives rather than corporate money-sequence rights have been usurped from top to bottom. The world has thus been coerced to civil and ecological breakdown by the private money sequence system for no life function, and it has been subverted most by what is not seen – the silent hijacking of constitutional public control of money creation. This is the deepest unrecognised civil commons of publicly protected exchange medium which has been wrested away from the public. The design is not new, but elaborated since Benjamin Franklin and others reported it as the main reason the Thirteen Colonies rebelled against British rule. It was Britain’s banning of the “colonial scrip” by the 1775 Currency Act which had enabled the independent prosperity of the Colonies, and whose outlawing by the private Bank of England caused a depression.
This is the one cause of the American Revolution you never read about in history books. The private bank appropriation of public currency and credit is the tuning core of the financial subjugation of societies, but is little known. Today it is led by endless debt issue by banks without the money to back it. As long as public and constitutional jurisdiction over exchange medium and public credit is not reclaimed, the life security of people and peoples is broken step by step beneath even Marxian detection.[13]
From the Depression, Anti-Fascist War and Decolonisation to the Corporate Occupation
The corporate money-right takeover of government has entailed the destruction of the social state. Democratic government’s real function of serving, regulating and enabling the common life interest of its people is mutated into serving the private money sequences of transnational and bank corporations instead. This systemic, life-and-death conflict within the contemporary state and its citizen body is not academically or officially recognised – although the Wall Street motto of the one percent and the 99 percent opens the window to it. In terms of the life and money codes of value, it is the war between life requirements of human beings and private money-rights for corporate persons which is the essence of the whole matter.
We will not here engage the usual rationalizations away of this war of aggression as “the engine of the economy”, “the provider of jobs”, “society’s wealth producer” and “the return of power to the private sector”. The facts clearly demonstrate the opposite on all scores. The corporate-rights system pervasively invades people’s private lives at every channel and node. Its money sequences ever more preponderantly produce nothing or junk. Its essential mode of enrichment is eliminating people’s jobs and downgrading them, not creating them. And it wastes, pollutes and runs down the life capital bases of societies towards collapse, a cumulative wealth destroyer at the real level. “Wealth” in the money-sequence code means only private money control at the top
In an age of induced amnesia of the real economy and real peoples’ struggle for freedom, we require an historical perspective which takes into account the economic and social progression of society before the corporate-right usurpation of it. Before 1945 ended the most systematically genocidal system in history, the Nazi’s proclaimed natural right to rule other societies by eradication of non-Aryan peoples and limiting borders of Europe followed upon earlier cultural genocides and enslavements of other peoples from Latin America to Africa to India to Vietnam by a broader and longer-lived Euro-American colonialism. Accompanying and preceding these imperial systems there were the ecogenocides of the first peoples across the American hemisphere, while before and coincident with these there was the clearance of the village commons of the British countrysides during and through the rise of its world-wide empire. Analysis can track this ruling pattern of ecogenocidal depredation and rule back through millennia and before corporate rule itself to the command of Yahweh to “exterminate all the men, women and children” of the “Promised Land” whose claimed right reigns still today.
This enduring pattern of massacre, occupation and exploitation where all rights are on the one side and none for the rest is what Europe’s emergence out of a continental zone of wars into an enduring multinational union of many-sided civil commons and rights of human life led world civilisation. Yet the only lasting large-scale social system in modern history to regulate towards social justice and universal human life goods provision for all citizens has been and continues to be systematically reversed. Transnational corporate relocation of production to regions with no labor or environmental standards to sell back into societies so as to thereby bankrupt their advanced and independent civil commons has been the global corporate formula. Captive states extending cumulative public subsidies of every kind to these same dominant private corporations to defund social programs has been the complementary policy formula for the public’s dispossession. “The tough new global marketplace” is the master meta idea, recalling John D. Rockefeller’s famous declaration: “The disparity in income between the rich and the poor is merely the survival of the fittest - - - the working out of a law of nature and a law of God”.
At the level of international law which had unprecedentedly moved beyond this credo after the defeat of Nazism, the corporate-rights reverse has instituted a pre-Nazi contempt for life-protective laws and human rights. No such law or norm, however binding and sacredly sworn to by governments since 1945, is now enforced. The International Criminal Court is only used by the world’s lead corporate state which has not ratified it. The laws and covenants against genocide or for economic and political rights – a very impressive body of law as we see ahead – are effectively suspended. In effect only unilateral private corporate rights are imposed by transnational trade treaties effectively annulling all rights but of corporate investors.
All international law in the common life interest is ignored unless usable against non-corporate state targets. The macro imposition of the global corporate-rights system across political differences and borders now rules the world’s economies and politics as absolute wherever corporate rights are concerned . It is a far more embracing absolutism than Nazism achieved and it is managed by financial means with war as a back-up rather than the leading edge. The global corporate-rights system entitles, for example, override of national and regional legislation everywhere, and huge fines against government’s public budgets for disobeying the countless new “disciplines” adjudicated by in-secret procedures of tribunals of appointed trade lawyers.
The Morality of Corporate Rights: No Rights Except for Private Money Sequences
There is no morality but “free trade” throughout - a moral theology of the ‘invisible hand’ which is believed to necessarily produce the best of possible worlds whatever the exchanges for price and profit might be – for example, financial syndicate/ bank/ hedgefund betting on higher cereal crops and oil prices pumped by massively subsidized bio-fuels at the same time to make a killing when millions cannot afford the higher prices and go hungry or starve.
The fanaticism of the moral theology of theo-capitalism has many expressions. It also includes calling E.U. refusal of genetically engineered foods “immoral”, forgiving poor countries’ debts a “moral hazard”, and – perhaps above all – bombing defenceless societies with socially owned oil revenues as “enemies of freedom”.
Thus the goal of “world rule” long projected onto the Soviet Union has been strategically achieved by the global money party. Its perpetual war of movement and position to grow private money sequences across all limits explains why even in the aftermath of the self-caused corporate-bank collapse of 2008, public funds have gone to large corporate bank bailouts and none or little to the poor, the disemployed, the home-expropriated, the pension-ruined and, least of all, to public options in place of the private corporate failures.
It follows from this ruling disorder that human persons and their life conditions cumulatively dissolve into functions of transnational corporate rule – that is, to grow corporate-person money-sequences anywhere and everywhere for maximum private profit with no life-protective regulatory limitations or life costs computed. Backed by countless rules enforceable against still pliant governments, this extra-parliamentary corporate rights reign still commands intra- and inter-governmental relations across the G-20 and beyond.
Real persons’ lives and life support systems do not factor in at all. Life-grounded morality is not only alien to this absolutist corporate-rights system, but attacked whenever societies or movements seek to institute mutual life security or public ownership of natural resources. If protection of life support system or resource control is profitable to deny or destroy, then private and borderless corporate extractors will eradicate them as “barriers” unless peoples stop them. There is no limit to what will be seized or eliminated in the name of “market freedom”. Even if the enemy is a poverty-ridden peasant movement seeking untilled land to farm or to deploy resource revenues for food subsidies, free healthcare, education, or other public means of life, they are lethally attacked, or bombed to oblivion – as in Iraq and Libya in recent years. This is the long ecogenocidal method of the world’s ultimate rogue state.
First-world states are enmeshed in its system and stripped by financial means. The testing question here is - what public health program, university education, broadcaster, or pension is safe in our country from the corporate-rights regime of economic occupation and budget stripping?
Social Justice and Economic Integrity: The Life Code in Social Defence
Such a systemically pathological pattern is not decided by ‘economic laws’ or ‘human nature’. It is imposed by a constructed and unilateral corporate rights system whose nature is to deny all other rights, most basically to human life. This is the secret history of modern capitalism from before the Reagan presidency’s explicit turn from “human rights” to the “fight against communism” – that is, against indigenous poor people fighting for land and means of existence. The previous world war, in contrast, was against fascism - not for it.
History is decided not fated. Thus the 1939-45 war was directed against a mass-murderous system for the rights of human beings to live, and waged by real economies – from universal public rations of scarce life goods to full employment of citizens to controls on private money attacks on society’s life capacities to the sovereign right of nations to self-determination against foreign occupation. All are now down the memory hole of the global corporate occupation. Under the Orwellian concept of “growth”, it is now structured to invade the world at all levels of life organisation, and corrupt, extort or obliterate whatever stands in the way.
After the victory over racist fascism, the money-sequence absolutism behind it was held in check. The world flourished in real life economy and human rights perhaps more than ever before in the human condition – mystified by Hobsbaum and the left as “the golden age”. Over 30 years of civil commons building was achieved before the new global corporate absolutism, the incubus of the old, seized borderless global power by the invisible coup d’etat anatomized ahead. Behind the lure of market commodities, big lies about more jobs and closing out of unions, backroom writing of an override system for all economies, and black armed force from the streets to the sky, the coup prevailed in macrocosm as it had in microcosm in Chile before.
While the new driver of private money profit and consumption has cumulatively depredated life capacities on most levels, it is still absurdly called “wealth creation” and “freedom” no matter how despoiling of healthy life it in fact is. On the other hand, the diverse building of a very different kind of social order dedicated to the lives of its citizens becoming better by universal access to universal life goods has been warred upon. Behind a culture of pervasive lies and ostentation, the ‘enemy’ is, decoded, any social ordering or public sector universally providing necessary life goods without mediation by corporate price and profit.
Yet the civil commons basis of human life cannot die so long as society exists, and it continues into the institutional present. Its social formations have already evolved in both mixed capitalist and state-socialist economies, and are still supported by great majorities. Yet global corporate absolutism is structured to grow only private money sequences to more. In a world whose aggregate demand has been hollowed out by non-stop appropriation of revenues from working people and the social state, depression is predictable. It is in this dead-end that the corporate bank, oil and oligopolist axis finds its last great frontier - public budgets to loot. This metastasis to the core of social life organisation by the transnational money-sequence growth system cannot be sustained. It implodes into one disaster after another. It cannot correct its incapacity for provision of otherwise scarce means of life to which it is blind in principle and only degrades over time – from food, water and healthcare to science and higher education.
The failed corporate-rights system cannot, in short, continue on without despoiling the world. It plunders the world’s life capital bases of reproduction, and its major consumer ‘goods’ are disease and death causing. India’s increasingly captive state may in 2012 let the global junk food system in to flood its society as everywhere else with sugar-salt-fat addictive substances (post-apartheid Africa the latest case). Nonetheless at the world system level, the return of humanity’s social evolution occurs again in Latin America’s resounding repudiation across nations of the “neo-liberal model” and new economic success. Despite the euphemistic category for reduction of human society to an instrument for private money sequencing with no purpose beyond multiplying itself, the long-haul r/evolution continues.
‘Never Again’ is an Empty Slogan
The United States must resolve that ‘never again’ is not just an ‘empty slogan’, said U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday, in a statement marking Holocaust Remembrance Day. Yet, I am left bewildered, what does president Obama refers to? Is ‘never again’ a universal message pointing at genocides in general or did he refer to Jewish suffering only? With 1,455,590 dead Iraqis due to an Anglo American criminal war, it seems as if the USA is actually complicit in an actual genocide.
Obama’s comments followed Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s Holocaust Memorial Day address at Yad Vashem where he stated that Israel’s “enemies tried to bury the Jewish future but our future was born again in the land of our forefathers, here we built a base, and a new beginning of freedom, and hope and action.”
Netanyahu, as usual, was almost correct. The ‘Jewish future’ was indeed born again after the holocaust just to introduce total misery, racism, expansionism, oppression, death and carnage to the entire Middle East. The so-called ‘Jewish State’ has managed, in just a few decades, to locate itself as the primary threat to world peace. With the Jewish State and its lobbies pushing for a war against Iran, there is little room for doubt- Israel is driven by a suicidal inclination in the spirit of Biblical Samson. Yet, being a nuclear super power, Israel’s potential self-inflicted tragedy may as well put an end to the world, as we know it.
In Yad Vashem, the Israeli PM, once again explored the most banal pre-traumatic stress symptoms. He went on to say that today’s generation “faces calls to exterminate the Jewish State,” and that lessons of the past must not be forgotten. Netanyahu obviously focused on Iran, calling it an existential threat to Israel, and to world peace. He added, “It is the world’s responsibility to stop Iran securing nuclear weapons.”
PM Netanyahu is obviously wrong. It is actually obvious that nuclear Iran could only save Israel from itself. It would restrain the Jewish State and stop it from exploring its lethal inclinations.
If Obama is sincere, if ‘never again’ isn’t just an ‘empty slogan’ as he says, he better goes out of his way to restrain Israel’s genocidal inclinations and its belligerent pro-war Lobbies around the world.

As a result, the CIA has a near-total psychological grip on the American mind. It is an occupation of consciousness.
Below, I will try my best to debunk the top ten myths about the CIA’s psychological occupation of the American mind and the global collective mind. As a French woman said on the day of the September 11 fraud, “Today, we are all Americans.” So, in a very real way, we are all living under psychological occupation, because the American mind and the global mind were combined into one single planetary mind immediately after the 9/11 events and the subsequent illegal global war on terrorism.
II. Debunking 10 Myths About The CIA’s Psychological Occupation of The American Mind
1. Myth: CIA mind control methods are super high-tech and futuristic. It is like the film ‘The Manchurian Candidate.’
Fact: Collective mind control is an ancient art. It is based on the most basic and ancient technology of humankind: language. The CIA relies on language more than high-tech gadgetry to persuade the people of America and the world that its version of history is the correct one. It also uses four other basic mind control tools: exploiting the spirit of patriotism for wars; repetition of key words, concepts, narratives, and ideas in the press; discrediting critics with smears and ridicule; and suppression of alternative viewpoints in newspapers, magazines, television, films, and books.
2. Myth: The CIA is interested in protecting the United States from national security threats, not brainwashing the American people and controlling their perceptions of their country and of its relation to the outside world.
Fact: The CIA justifies its miserable, evil, and corrupt existence by creating its own enemies. Sometimes, this means arming, funding, and training terrorists, especially those of the Islamic variety. And sometimes, it means creating imaginary threats out of scratch and making the world believe that they are real threats by constantly pushing the image of the invented threats into the public mind through the mass media. So, the CIA actually has a very negative effect on the national security of the United States. Its epoch-making covert operations like the 9/11 fraud and the JFK assassination have destroyed America’s image as a country that respects the rule of law and human rights. The myth of America is no longer believed in by the majority of the world’s population nor the American people.
3. Myth: The CIA cannot pull off an explosive event like 9/11 and then cover up its criminal actions for a decade and more from the global general public. It simply does not have the awesome capabilities to perform such a big trick and twist reality like a God.
Fact: The CIA is not a monolithic organization. It is a complex bureaucratic structure. There is a shadow CIA within the CIA, which has an incredible amount of power over the American government because it can act with total impunity and secrecy. Many researchers have said that the CIA is a government onto itself. Whenever any criminal organization is left to its own devices, and the CIA’s devices are indeed god-like, it will do whatever it can to advance its interests and its power beyond the limits of human reason. The biggest dream of all conquerors in history is world domination, and this is no different when it comes to the CIA. If given almost total power over reality and the public mind, any world power would attempt world domination, even if it meant failing big. So, in many ways, America is a victim of its own success.
4. Myth: The CIA’s most controversial
programs such as project MK-ULTRA and Operation Mockingbird were shut
down decades ago. The CIA said goodbye to these types of covert
operations to influence the American people and domestic politics.

pro-America. It is good for America. It would never commit the horrible
act of murdering 3,000 innocent people on American soil in broad
daylight and then use its numerous media assets to create a fictitious
historical narrative in order to pursue world hegemony. Why would the
CIA ever do such an evil thing to America? The CIA is the government
version of sunshine and apple pie. It is the home of rainbows and
rabbits.
Fact: The CIA is a creature of Wall Street, which is run by transnational private central Banksters whose publicly stated mission is the destruction of the United States and the creation of an authoritarian world government, run by them. So, the CIA is not a patriotic institution, as recruits are told. The CIA is ran by international banksters, traitors, terrorists, and social deviants. It is the enemy of America in disguise. The CIA and the American Constitution stand at polar opposites. Creating chaos and staging terrorist attacks is the standard operating procedure of the CIA. Crime is to the CIA what water is to a plant.
6. Myth: Government brainwashing is what goes on in societies under totalitarian political systems like the Soviet Union, North Korea, and Iran, where a state media is central to constructing the political and cultural image of the society. America does not have a totalitarian political system nor a state media that runs propaganda all day, so America is not a totalitarian hellhole like other closed societies.
Fact: America was overthrown. The American people live under a quasi-totalitarian state which has many agents in the private media, entertainment industry, academia, and other cultural and social institutions. The American system of totalitarianism is more sophisticated because it still retains the myth that America is a free and democratic country in order to keep the people from getting angry and revolting.
Fact: The CIA is incompetent in the rare times when it tries to do good. But it is very efficient at doing evil, which is every other day of the week. When it comes to lying and twisting reality, the CIA is equivalent to God in American society. Of course, there are limits to what the CIA can do and get away with, but, as we saw on 9/11, those limits are literally sky high. The CIA can kill the President of the United States and be like, “Yeah, we killed Kennedy. So what? And we killed his brother, too. Cause that’s how we roll, bitches! So shut your lips and put your heads down, slaves. We rule now.”
8. Myth: I am too smart and educated to be brainwashed and duped on such a big scale and for such a long time.
Fact: The Germans were more educated than you and I, but they got taken in by Hitler and his fascist crew. So don’t take it personally. It’s okay to admit that you made a mistake and that you were wrong. It’s human. We can be conditioned very easily to believe a certain way about a person, an event, or a war. We’re all vulnerable of being led like sheep by sinister governments, especially when we don’t ask basic questions about the fundamental narratives and ideas in our society and in our national political conversations.
9. Myth: CIA is GOD. Its power is all pervasive. It knows everything. It controls everything. It spies on everything. It can kill any leader it wants. It can overthrow as many governments it desires. It is Satan manifest in the flesh.
Fact: While the heads of the CIA and its occult controllers like to think that they are GOD, at the end of the day they are nothing more than a gang of dirty crooks who have lost their heads, their moral compass, and their powers of judgment. The CIA’s mass mind control policy relies just as much on self-policing and self-censorship as it does on media propaganda and government censorship. The guard within your own mind is more of a control freak than any government guard. The CIA is not something to be afraid of. If you have to fear some great and all-powerful force in the world, fear God, not the government. But really, you don’t even have to fear God. Fear doing evil, but not evil itself.
10. Myth: If it is not mentioned in the media, then it is not real. So the CIA’s policy of mass mind control and collective brainwashing can’t be real because the TV news channels and other media outlets never mention it.
Fact: To a large degree, the CIA and the mainstream media are one and the same. The U.S. government’s state media is not like the Chinese, Russian, Cuban, or Iranian state media, but it is still a state media. The only difference is there is the illusion in America that there is a separation between the private sphere of news coverage and the official sphere of power. But in reality, there is no separation. Officials in the highest positions of power in Washington manage the news in America, direct the national conversation, cover up uncomfortable truths, and set the official standards for public debate. They are totalitarian thugs who masquerade as defenders of freedom and providers of security.
III. The Global Resistance To The CIA’s Psychological Occupation of The Global Collective Mind
The CIA, Mossad, and MI6 are all partners in the psychological occupation of Earth. The fraudulent events of 9/11 and 7/7 demonstrated their powerful psychological warfare capabilities. They successfully brainwashed the people of the world and invented political fictions to advance their plot to gain total control of the Middle East and destroy civil liberties in the West.
But their success in imposing false narratives on a global population is illusory. There is a massive, worldwide resistance to the psychological occupation of the global collective mind by the CIA, Mossad, and MI6. These secret state intelligence agencies are not the gods of Earth. They are just children playing with fire who will end up burning themselves even more than the rest of us.

On May 10, 2011, 43-year old Allen Kephart died after having a Taser applied to him multiple times by three San Bernardino, California, sheriff's deputies during a routine traffic stop in Lake Arrowhead.
"I feel that my son was murdered, I feel that something has to be done about law enforcement," says Alfred Kephart, who filed a wrongful death lawsuit in San Bernardino Superior Court, August 30, 2011.
High profile police related deaths like Allen Kepharts' are pushing activists, families and courts to question whether Tasers or officers are to blame, but the answer to that question is a tricky one.
Numerous studies and reviews from the National Institute of Justice, Amnesty International and the Police Executive Research Forum have come to different conclusions on Tasers and how officers use them. A study in the American Heart Journal even revealed that studies funded by Taser International were "substantially more likely to conclude Tasers are safe."
Former federal prosecutor Laurie Levenson says that when it comes to Tasers, safety depends on the circumstances in the case.
"We can remember back to the Rodney King case and in fact they did try to use a Taser there and it didn't work, where we had police using so much force, it was almost lethal," says Levenson. She points out that often questions of force from officers using Tasers come up after minor traffic violations.
According to Peter Bebring , staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, that is because when police are led to believe Tasers can't cause harm, they "are more likely to use them in circumstances where they would never consider using more serious force, like a gun."
Those types of circumstances led the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in October 2011, to look at more incidents involving Tasers and policing, one being the Tasing of a woman eight months into her pregnancy. The court found that when police use a stun gun it may be a violation of Constitutional law.
In the year 2000, around 5,000 law enforcement, correctional and military agencies were using Tasers, by 2011, that number climbed to 16,000 - 12 January 2012.

How evil is this? At a time when two-thirds
of U.S. homeowners are drowning in mortgage debt and the American dream
has crashed for tens of millions more, Sanford Weill, the banker most
responsible for the nation’s economic collapse, has been elected to the
American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
So much for the academy’s proclaimed
“230-plus year history of recognizing some of the world’s most
accomplished scholars, scientists, writers, artists, and civic,
corporate, and philanthropic leaders.” George Washington, Ralph Waldo
Emerson and Albert Einstein must be rolling in their graves at the news
that Weill, “philanthropist and retired Citigroup Chairman,” has joined
their ranks.
Weill is the Wall Street hustler who led
the successful lobbying to reverse the Glass-Steagall law, which long
had been a barrier between investment and commercial banks. That 1999
reversal permitted the merger of Travelers and Citibank, thereby
creating Citigroup as the largest of the “too big to fail” banks
eventually bailed out by taxpayers. Weill was instrumental in getting
then-President Bill Clinton to sign off on the Republican-sponsored
legislation that upended the sensible restraints on finance capital that
had worked splendidly since the Great Depression.
Those restrictions were initially flouted
when Weill, then CEO of Travelers, which contained a major investment
banking division, decided to merge the company with Citibank, a
commercial bank headed by John S. Reed. The merger had actually been
arranged before the enabling legislation became law, and it was granted a
temporary waiver by Alan Greenspan’s Federal Reserve. The night before
the announcement of the merger, as Wall Street Journal reporter Monica
Langley writes in her book “Tearing Down the Walls: How Sandy Weill
Fought His Way to the Top of the Financial World ... and Then Nearly
Lost It All,” a buoyant Weill suggested to Reed, “We should call
Clinton.” On a Sunday night Weill had no trouble getting through to the
president and informed him of the merger, which violated existing law.
After hanging up, Weill boasted to Reed, “We just made the president of
the United States an insider.”
The fix was in to repeal Glass-Steagall, as
The New York Times celebrated in a 1998 article: “... the announcement
on Monday of a giant merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group not only
altered the financial landscape of banking, it also changed the
political landscape in Washington. ... Indeed, within 24 hours of the
deal’s announcement, lobbyists for insurers, banks and Wall Street firms
were huddling with Congressional banking committee staff members to
fine-tune a measure that would update the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act
separating commercial banking from Wall Street and insurance, to make it
more politically acceptable to more members of Congress.”
At the signing ceremony Clinton presented Weill with one of the pens he
used to “fine-tune” Glass-Steagall out of existence, proclaiming, “Today
what we are doing is modernizing the financial services industry,
tearing down those antiquated laws and granting banks significant new
authority.” What a jerk.
Although Weill has shown not the slightest
remorse, Reed has had the honesty to acknowledge that the elimination of
Glass-Steagall was a disaster: “I would compartmentalize the industry
for the same reason you compartmentalize ships,” he told Bloomberg News.
“If you have a leak, the leak doesn’t spread and sink the whole vessel.
So generally speaking, you’d have consumer banking separate from
trading bonds and equity.”
Instead, all such compartmentalization was
ended when Clinton signed the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in late 1999. In
his memoir Weill brags that he and Republican Sen. Phil Gramm joked that
it should have been called the Weill-Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Informally, some dubbed it “the Citigroup Authorization Act.”
Gramm left the Senate to become a top
executive at the Swiss-based UBS bank, which like Citigroup ran into
deep trouble. Leach—former Republican Rep. James Leach—was appointed by
President Barack Obama in 2009 to head the National Endowment for the
Humanities, where his banking skills could serve the needs of
intellectuals. Robert Rubin, the Clinton administration treasury
secretary who helped push through the Citigroup Authorization Act, was
the most blatant double dealer of all: He accepted a $15-million-a-year
offer from Weill to join Citigroup, where he eventually helped run the
corporation into the ground.
Citigroup went on to be a major purveyor of
toxic mortgage-based securities that required $45 billion in direct
government investment and a $300 billion guarantee of its bad assets in
order to avoid bankruptcy.
Weill himself bailed out shortly before the
crash. His retirement from what was then the world’s largest financial
conglomerate was chronicled in The New York Times under the headline
“Laughing All the Way From the Bank.” The article told of “an enormous
wooden plaque” in the bank’s headquarters that featured a likeness of
Weill with the inscription “The Man Who Shattered Glass-Steagall.”
That’s the man the American Academy of Arts
& Sciences now honors, among others, for “extraordinary
accomplishment and a call to serve.” Disgusting.
