Occupy Oakland Black Friday Action at Target and Ikea
We entered Target on black friday, 2011, with coupons offering people hand-crafted gifts, and telling them about some of the worst things Target has recently done. We shopped for tents, tarps, and RED items, filling carts and then going to the checkout stands. We then coordinated everyone abandoning their carts, leaving them jammed in the checkouts. The flyers were passed out as we all moved to IKEA. "Shop local" and "Stop Sweatshops" banners were dropped from the parking lot between the two corporate department stores. We then repeated the same action in IKEA, and mic checked at the end, to remind people to shop in downtown Oakland instead of giving their money to the same corporations that rob us all and mistreat workers, as well as taking jobs from Americans and exporting them overseas. Props to OccupySF, who were, at the same time, shutting down corporate stores in SF with sit-ins. We did not do this to frustrate customers or workers. However, we find it quite hard to have our voices heard in this culture unless we wave our hands in front of the eyes of those who are still lost in the American Dream. The handmande gifts were offered specifically to anyone who was effected negatively by this event. Peace!
